The Mozambique government reports that its security police captured 18 AK-47s and "quantities of ammunition and military radios." The arms were found in the homes of members of the Mozambique National Resistance (RENAMO) opposition. RENAMO and the government signed a peace agreement in 1992 that has been one of the few stable sub-Saharan African peace agreements. The civil war lasted 16 years. RENAMO now operates as an opposition political party. A western news source also reported that RENAMO has a 150-man "security force."
