Philippines: Moslem Militants Continue to Battle Each Other

August 3, 2006: Counter-terrorism operations on Jolo island have left four dead over the past three days. Several battalions of troops, and hundreds of police are involved.
August 1, 2006: On Jolo island, security forces have launched an operation to catch two Islamic terrorists believed to be on the island. The two terrorists are believed part of the gang that carried out the 2002 Bali bombing in Indonesia. There are also believed to be 100-200 Abu Sayyaf terrorists on the island as well. Some American intelligence troops are involved in the search.
July 31, 2006: In an attempt at intimidation, NPA rebels attacked a local officials home south of the capital, killing a nephew and wounding three other people.
July 29, 2006: On Jolo island, kidnappers claiming to be Abu Sayyaf kidnapped two civilians had held them for ransom. Meanwhile, north of the capital, police caught a gang of wanted kidnappers on their way to work, and killed all nine of them. Kidnappings are up again. There were only 29 in 2004, fifty last year, and 30 in the first six months of this year.
July 27, 2006: The fighting between MILF factions in the south continues, leaving at least ten dead over the last few days.
