June 11, 2006: Two bombs, or hand grenades, went off in the capital, and one in a town 75 kilometers south of the capital. Nine people were wounded. No one recognizable immediately took credit, and the police are not sure the attacks were made by Islamic terrorists. Criminal and political groups also use these kinds of smaller bombs to intimidate.

June 5, 2006: The government believes that the leader of Abu Sayyaf and two Indonesian terrorists (connected to the 2002 Bali bombing) are on Jolo island, planning new attacks in the southern Philippines. Thousands of troops are on Jolo, trying to track down Islamic radicals. The locals have, for centuries, resisted outside control, and tend to work with the Islamic radicals, who they see as "protecting" Jolo from the largely Christian government. But the military and police have developed an informant network, which does provide good data on who is trying to do what on the island.
