In the northern Philippines, about 40 NPA rebels attacked a village guarded by local militia. The rebels were run off, but not before killing one villager, and wounding another, as well as one of the militiamen. The government arms and trains villagers to keep NPA, and bandits, from extorting food and money from villagers.
