The NPA's success in extorting money from businesses has grown over five times in the last five years. Most of the growth has come in the past year, since the NPA was identified as a terrorist organization, and cut off from contributions from foreign supporters. The increased use of extortion has caused some businesses to cut back operations, causing unemployment. In other cases, large companies have fought back, resulting in loss of life and destroyed property. NPA has become less popular, as it is increasingly seen as a bunch of gangsters running an extortion racket.
