Gunmen in boats tried to seize hostages from a tourist resort on Samal island. But resort staff and soldiers resisted. Two hotel staff were killed by what were apparently Abu Sayyaf rebels. Nearby army units promptly took off after the rebels (who took local civilians captive to be used as human shields).
