The army finally freed the American hostage on Jolo by changing their tactics and relying more on good relations with, and information from, local civilians. Scout Rangers and Marines were deployed as small recon groups, operating like guerillas themselves, and covered a wider area. Using leads from locals and moving quickly through the bush, they made it more difficult for the Abu Sayyaf  bands from moving quickly themselves. When an Abu Sayyaf group was located, the patrols called in more troops by ground and helicopter and quickly attacked. The army says they know where the remaining Abu Sayyaf groups are and are closing in on them. One hostage (a Filipino) remains with the Abu Sayyaf.
