In a rare case of prosecuting corruption, two navy admirals were dismissed from service for their role in the theft of a confiscated oil tanker (and 11,000 tons of oil, worth about $3 million) in August, 2003. The tanker had been caught smuggling, and the admirals arranged for the sale of the ship and its oil, and pocketed the money. This was the first time such high ranking officials have been convicted of corruption.
