The recent coup attempt in the island country of San Tome, off Nigeria's coast, was suppressed largely via threats from Nigeria. The coup was partly a protest against allegations that corrupt San Tome leaders had been bought off to grant Nigeria a favorable deal to exploit underwater oil fields between San Tome and Nigeria.
