The imposition of Islamic (Sharia) law in the northern states has brought about a crises as Sharia courts condemn women to death for adultery. This has caused a national and international uproar, particularly when it became known that the woman was raped. While no woman has been executed yet, and one has had her conviction overturned (because her crime occurred before Sharia came into force.  But another woman has been put under a death sentence (which, according to Sharia, is carried out by stoning). The federal government threatens to overrule such Sharia convictions. Some governors in the north vow armed resistance to this.
