A retired army colonel is supervising the training of 6,000 Tiv tribesmen in Benue state. A Tiv militia group killed 19 soldiers last month, mistaking them for militiamen from the Jukun tribe. There has long been bad feeling between the Tiv and other tribes in central Nigeria. Police are arresting Tic suspected of militia activity or possession of illegal weapons.
