A report by the the commander of UN troops in Sierra Leone charges that over the years that Nigerian generals ran peacekeeping operations in the country, the generals became increasingly corrupt, even doing business with the RUF rebels. Back in Nigeria there was indignation from army officers, and demands that the Indian general commanding UN forces in Sierra Leone be dismissed. The corruption of Nigerian officers and troops in peacekeeping operations had long been noted. Despite years of peacekeeping by Nigerian troops, peace never seemed to arrive. The UN report accuses the Nigerians of wanting the violence to continue so that they can continue to cash in on it.
