Nepal: Anarchy in the Countryside

Archives

November 17, 2005: The Maoists continue to abduct, and attempt to recruit to their cause, hundreds of teenage students, and their teachers. Students who withstand the indoctrination (most of them) are released, but the teachers are also lectured, and threatened, and forced to change their teaching methods to those that support the Maoists. Local officials are also threatened, killed or driven out. All of this is causing much economic and political distress in the countryside, because of the Maoist campaign, and many Nepalese are getting tired of it.

November 15, 2005: Some 45 Maoist rebels surrendered to the government, 160 kilometers south of the capital. In many parts of the country, the Maoists have made themselves unpopular with their dictatorial tactics. Popular resistance to the Maoists has demoralized the local Maoists, and caused many to quit the movement.
