Battles between Maoists and troops have declined, but the Maoists continue to kidnap people, and extort money from businesses in the countryside. The Maoist campaign to destroy the economy, as a way to destroy the power of the government, continues to be successful. Maoist terror and threats is impeding economic activity, and making life harder for more and more Nepalese.
November 8, 2005: Maoists released the son of a former prime minister, after a ransom of $461,000 was paid. The victim was held captive for ten days.
