The Maoists continue their campaign to destroy the economy and fabric of society in Nepal. Teachers and other government officials are still being attacked and kidnapped, while the Maoists try to establish their own governments in rural areas. This often meets with resistance from the people the Maoists say they are liberating. The Maoists want to establish a communist dictatorship, but many rural Nepalese want to keep their property, as meager as it is. The Maoists have succeeded in hurting the economy, causing the GDP to shrink by up to ten percent in the past year, increasing poverty and unemployment.
