In the last week, Maoist rebels kidnapped some 650 high school students in remote parts of western Nepal. The Maoists do this to recruit new fighters, and to indoctrinate potential supporters. Most of the children are usually returned home after a few days. But those who volunteer to fight, are kept and begin training. Many of these eventually die from exposure or in combat with soldiers or police. In this case, the army tracked down the students and rescued them from the Maoists, who fled as the troops approached.
