The unrest caused by the Maoist terrorism is hurting the economy. In the first three months of this year, the two biggest foreign exchange earners, tourism and apparel/textile exports, fell by about a third. Growing unemployment creates more unrest. The Maoists believe that if they can cause economic collapse, they can take over and establish a communist dictatorship. Many Nepalese fear that the Maoists would establish a murderous communist terror, as did the communist Cambodian Khmer Rouge in 1975. The Khmer Rouge went on to kill over a million people in their attempt to establish a workers paradise.
