Maoist rebels kidnapped 700 students and 45 teachers from five schools in eastern Nepal. The students will undergo a few days of indoctrination, after which a portion of them will volunteer to join the Maoist forces. The teachers, and most of the rest of the students, will then be sent home, with threats of retribution if they oppose the Maoists. Some teachers will be killed, if they appear particularly resistant to Maoist beliefs. Some students will be kept as slave labor, to carry supplies and dig fortifications.
