Like something out of a Kipling novel, Maoist rebels attacked a Nepali Army base at Khara (a village about 250 miles west of Katmandu) around midnight 27/28 May. The rebels rushed the defenses in human waves, using looted Army rocket launchers and automatic weapons, before being stopped by government firepower. Helicopters with night-vision equipment were sent to the area overnight from an army base in Nepalgunj and more reinforcements arrived on the morning of the 28th. The rebels fled that same morning, retreating "in all directions ... running helter-skelter" while leaving automatic weapons and ammunition on the battlefield. The body count quickly went from 80 to 100 rebels. By the 30th the army had counted 152 terrorists killed in the attack on the camp while five soldiers were killed and 22 wounded in the Rukum district battle. - Adam Geibel
