The war with the Maoist rebels has left some 4,000 people dead since 1996. Over half of these deaths have occurred since the rebels broke a truce last November. The king has called for new elections this Fall, two years ahead of schedule, because the current parliament has been reluctant to continue vigorously pursuing the fighting against the rebels.
