  Today, new UN sanctions on Liberia begin. The main one prohibits any diamond exports from Liberia. This measure will stop the trade of illegal diamonds via Liberia. Rebels in neighboring countries have long  supported themselves via an illegal diamond trade. Liberia is protesting the sanctions, but there has been a long history of evidence that president Charles Taylor is involved in the illegal trade. Other sanctions limit the international travel of senior government officials.
