Kurdish rebel violence is on the rise in southeastern Turkey. Clashes between the Kongra Gel (PKK, after a name change) rebels and security forces (army and police) killed 22 in May, 38 in June and two dozen so far this month. In the first six months of 2004, 76 died, compared to 104 for all of last year, and only 22 in 2002. Kongra Gel dropped its unilateral ceasefire on June 1st. Turkey is pressuring Kurdish politicians in northern Iraq to stop allowing Kongra Gel to maintain camps, and get supplies, in northern Iraq.
