South Korean intelligence officials announced last week that North Korea has deployed longer range (3-4,000 kilometer) missiles that can hit Japan, as well as American bases in Okinawa and Guam. North Korea has long been thought to have an arsenal of some 600 SCUD missiles, with ranges of 300-500 kilometers, and about a hundred Rodong-1 missiles, with a range of 1,300 kilometers. The South Korean intelligence officers would not identify the new North Korean missiles, but said it was not the Taepodong-2, which has been in development for years and was thought to have a range of over 3,000 kilometers.
