More than two months after the conflict was declared over, the Ivory Coast marked the one-year anniversary of its civil war with commermorations, speaches and troop formations in Abidjan. However, opposition leader Alassane Ouattara placed the blame for the year of warfare on Gbagbo, questioning the president's legitimacy and "the impunity given to those responsible for intolerable human rights violations".
Locals articulated how the war has taken a toll on the once stable country. In their estimation, everything had gotten worse: basic social services, schools, health services, agriculture and trade. Measles, meningitis and cholera have reappeared, while only about 80 percent of health services are not functioning and four-fifths of staff had not returned to their posts. - Adam Geibel
