Israel: March 8, 2003

Total deaths in 28 months of violence has hit 3100, with 23 percent being Israeli. Palestinian leaders are trying to work out a peace deal with Israel and the terrorist organizations. The problem is that the terrorists (like Hamas, and half a dozen smaller groups) are largely uncompromising. They will settle for nothing less than the destruction of Israel and expulsion of Jews from the Middle East. The majority of Palestinians have been impoverished and demoralized by the loss of access to jobs in Israel and the Israeli security measures against terrorist attacks. But Palestinians, as a group, are unwilling to stop the terrorist operations by force and Israel is unwilling to stop trying to prevent the terrorist attacks anyway it can.
