The violence has hurt Israel in many ways. One is a reduction in migration. Always short of manpower, especially for the armed forces, migration is important. In 1999 there were 78,000 immigrants. In 2000, there were only 11,259. In the past 12 months, population increased 152,000. Since the nation's creation in 1948, 2.9 million have migrated to Israel. But some 20 percent have later migrated to other nations. Currently, Israel's population is 6.2 million. A million of that is Arab (some 18 percent.)
