Israeli troops and settlers in Gaza continue to suffer gunfire and bomb attacks from Palestinians. Most of the attacks are ambushes, the Palestinians apparently feeling that they have enough martyrs for the moment. The Palestinians have also begun using mortars, an escalation that worries the Israelis quite a bit. Mortars have a longer range (several miles) and can be fired from heavily populated areas. This makes it difficult for the Israelis to use their anti-mortar radar (which pinpoints where the mortar was fired from, and allows friendly artillery to fire right back.) Palestinian parents were becoming vocal in their opposition to the use of their unarmed teenage children in confrontations with Israeli troops. Israeli troops defused a bomb found in an abandoned donkey cart in Gaza. Peace talks have been suspended until after the Israeli elections next week.
