More American soldiers were killed in April, 129, than during the initial three week invasion of Iraq. Most of the casualties were not among combat troops, but among support units. The anti-government Iraqis have found the support troops, especially truck drivers and civil affairs troops working on reconstruction projects, easier targets. So far, 552 American soldiers have died fighting Iraqis. The Kurds and Shias, who comprise over 80 percent of the population, have been generally peaceful and cooperative. But the Sunni Arabs, who were the base of Saddams support, continue to resist. Many Sunnis support a democratic Iraq, but they are dealing with a heavily armed and quite vicious faction that wants to restore Sunni domination at any cost. Americans will probably still be fighting Sunnis right until the rest of Iraq comes up with a way to deal with this domestic political problem.
