A survey of households in southern (mainly Shia) Iraq indicates that in the last twelve years, nearly half the families down there had someone who was killed, jailed or tortured by Saddams secret police and Baath Party officials. In seventy percent of the cases of torture, the work (usually a severe beating, but often mutilation as well) was done in the home. This inflicted maximum terror on the population in general.
