Iraq: April 29, 2002

Archives

The latest rumors and leaks from the Pentagon indicate an invasion of Iraq in early 2003. The delay is caused largely by diplomatic and logistical problems. Saudi Arabia refuses to get involved and that means all the supplies and equipment needed must be moved to Kuwait and other Persian Gulf states. A force of 70-250.000 troops is being considered, depending on the situation inside Iraq. An increasing number of high ranking defectors of Iraq indicate that morale is low and that not much of an military operation would be required to topple Saddam's government. Iraq is also increasing it's arms smuggling from Eastern Europe (an area with a lot of Cold War era weapons and a large demand for cash.) Iraq is particularly interested in radars that can track stealth aircraft. Such radars do exist, but they are expensive and tricky to install and operate.
