Iraq has begun building a 1,200-kilometer  railroad line
from Basra (near Kuwait) to  Mosul (near Turkey), passing through Baghdad along the way. Iraq restored rail links with Syria in August 2000 and with Turkey in July
2001. China is supplying a lot of the equipment, including 50 railroad engines.  China has consistently pushed lifting UN sanctions on Iraq.
