Moderate and reform minded government officials are resigning, or being forced out by Islamic conservatives. Most of the population openly opposes the Islamic conservatives. But the majority does not want another revolution, the memories of the one in 1979 are still relatively fresh. Moreover, the Islamic conservatives have armed militias, and control of the military and police. The Islamic conservatives have openly admitted that they would use force to maintain their power. But at the same time, the Islamic conservatives are not moving as fast as they could to force the majority to conform to a more conservative Islamic lifestyle.
