For the moment, the government policy of arresting opposition leaders, not allowing opposition candidates to run for office and using gangs of young Islamic thugs to beat up demonstrators, has sent the reformers underground. The Islamic conservatives believe they are on a mission from God and that any opposition to their programs is blasphemy. The majority of Iranians disagree, but have not been willing to force the issue with violent revolution. But the majority simmers, and keeps their heads down.
