Iran: May 2, 2003

Archives

Iran is caught in an awkward position. The Islamic radicals that have veto power over the majority government now face superior American military power across the border in Iraq, and across the Persian Gulf in several countries allied with the US. Iranian Islamic radicals still support Shia terrorists in Lebanon (who, until al Qaeda's 2001 attacks, were responsible for killing more Americans than any other terrorist group.) They also provide support in Iranian camps and safe houses for terrorists from al Qaeda and other groups. A particularly bloody terrorist attack against Americans, with an Iranian connection, could bring American retribution against Iran. The Iranian Islamic radicals have not made up their minds yet how they are going to deal with this.
