For most young Iranians, a major reform was enacted today when the government announced that police could no longer stop and question young couples seen in public. By conservative Moslem standards, young men and women should not appear in public together without adult supervision. Police, if they feel like it, can stop, question, and even arrest such couples. This has caused much unrest among the young. The police are controlled by the religious conservatives, so this move is seen as a major concession by the clerics.
