A new development in the recent presidential elections was the organization and activity of political parties. The religious conservatives eliminated political parties during the 1979 revolution. But many such items have been quietly reintroduced of late (like young men and women meeting openly in public places.) The religious conservatives fear political parties as these can be used to organize armed rebellion against religious rule.
