Indonesian, Malaysian and Singapore naval officers are working out a plan for the three nations to provide 24/7 patrols in the Straits of Malacca, one of the busiest shipping channels in the world. The straights have been plagued by growing pirate attacks over the last few years. Without increased naval patrols, it is feared that shipping companies will shift their routes and hurt the local economies. Worse, a pirate attack could cause a major collision in the straights, and shut them down partially. Each of the three nations will contribute 5-7 small warships and negotiations will work out the details of command and coordination for the force, and the issues of warships operating in foreign waters.
