The four million residents living in Aceh continue to be terrorized by several thousand separatist rebels, and over 40,000 police and soldiers. All these armed men are determined to keep the civilian population loyal to them, and are willing to kill those civilians who appear to be aiding the other side. A year of martial law has not destroyed GAM, the rebel movement, and it may take years more of terror and violence to destroy the resistance. Aceh is too small to break away from Indonesia by force, but as long as locals are willing to fight, and terrorize their neighbors, the killing will continue.
