 A government investigation found that at least 100,000 of 3.9 million civil servants were collecting paychecks but not working (at least not for the government.) Most Indonesians are quite angry with government corruption, but many others feel that three percent is a rather low rate of civil servants who collect pay for no work.

Martial law in the Maluku islands has been lifted, after three years of religious violence. Over five thousand people have been killed in the violence, but a heavy police and army presence, and rooting out Islamic radicals, has brought peace.
