 The government has updated it's population statistics. Population is currently 212 million. Java, with seven percent of the land area, contains 59 percent of the population. Java has a population density of 951 per square kilometer, compared to 20 in Borneo and 9 in Papua. Java's population density is achieved by intensive agriculture, and growing urbanization (42 percent of the population currently lives in urban areas.) Also, some 30 percent of the population is 14 and under.
