Unidentified gunmen killed a judge with a military pistol (as discovered by examining the empty cartridges left behind.) The judge (Syafiuddin Kartasasmita) had last year sentenced to prison the son of the former dictator Suharto. The judge had also been investigating corruption by Suharto family members and their friends. Meanwhile, Hamzah Haz, head of a Moslem party and  previously against a woman being president or vice president, was elected vice president by the parliament. The president has carefully cultivated the Moslem parties and convinced them to accept a female president. In Aceh, rebel activity left five rebels, four soldiers and at least four civilians dead.
