  The situation in Irian Jaya continues to worsen. The Melanesian natives, many still living in the Stone Age, resent being ruled by the mainly Malay Indonesians. This has been compounded by the movement of hundreds of thousands of Malay migrants from other parts of Indonesia. The native Melanesians would like to merge with their independent kinsmen on the eastern half of New Guinea (the nation of Papua-New Guinea.)
