The West Timor violence on September 6 was apparently sparked by the murder of a militia leader. He was killed by members of a local criminal gang (with whom he had a dispute). This infuriated the militia leaders followers, and they went on a rampage, attacking UN workers as well as civilians. Indonesian soldiers and police did not interfere, which is not uncommon. Facing down hundreds of angry machete wielding men is not something Indonesian police have ever shown much enthusiasm for. Remember that "amok" is an Indonesian word for, well, running amok.  However, the government has promised that it will go after the militia and shut them down. Eventually. Meanwhile, two bombs went off in the capital of Aceh province. No casualties were reported.
