In Aceh, the rebel violence has created some 50,000 refugees who have fled the fighting. In Papua (formerly Irian Jaya), police retook a mountain airport that pro-independence rebels (armed with bows and clubs) had taken five days earlier. The rebels were concerned that the government was sending refugees from the Maluku's violence to their area. Such refugees have caused much resentment among the locals. Following the bloodless retaking of the airport, angry locals rioted, leaving one policeman and two civilians injured. A small, crudely made, bomb was found and removed from the gate to the US embassy in the capital.
