From October through the end of March, 2,004 people died from religious violence in the Maluku islands. Another 2,315 people are still missing, either hiding in the bush or dead. Property destruction has been immense, with 15,930 homes burned down, as well as 127 Christian churches and 114 mosques. The violence has created 168,000 refugees. While things are quiet right now, the violence is expected to continue. Local security officials expect to see another thousand killed in the next six months.
