The violence in Kashmir continues, with 5-10 people killed each day and continued attempts to bring fighters across the border from Pakistani camps.

Without much fanfare, Pakistan is dismissing army officers who are known, or suspected, of pro-Taliban and al Qaeda sympathies. Some officers have been arrested and charged for aiding terrorist groups. Most of these officers are from the tribal areas in the northwest (Pushtuns) or southwest (Baluchis). There are still many Islamic conservative officers, and these appear to be left alone for the moment. The government apparently feels strong enough to dismiss unreliable officers without risking a military coup. President Musharraf, a former head of the army, has already removed from service many generals with sympathy for Islamic radicals.
