India-Pakistan: August 11, 2003

Archives

In eastern India,  tribal separatist rebels (National
Liberation Front of Tripura, or NLFT) killed seven policemen.

In Kashmir, rebel violence left 14 dead. In the Indian capital, police arrested two Islamic militants (from Lashkar-e-Taiba), who were attempting to set up a terrorist cell. Lashkar-e-Taiba is one of the groups that participated in the December, 2001 attack on the Indian parliament. This attack brought India and Pakistan to the brink of war, because India accuses Pakistan of supporting Islamic militants in India and Kashmir.

On the Afghan border, two Pakistani border guards were killed while American and Afghan troops fought Taliban gunmen who were fleeing back to their bases in Pakistan. The US apologized for the deaths, but the incident highlighted the continuing problem with Pakistan tolerating Taliban camps.
