  In eastern India, Maoist rebels killed ten policemen. 

In Kashmir, rebel violence left four dead. 

Along the Afghan border, Pakistani troops continued to exchange fire with Afghans as part of an ongoing dispute of exactly where the border is. Negotiations continue to settle the issue of where the border is.

In northwestern Pakistan, the growing strength of fundamentalist Islam has provided protection for pro-Taliban elements and anti-Western attitudes. The provincial and federal government have tried to keep the violence down, so as not to scare away Western aid organizations.
