India-Pakistan: May 23, 2003

Archives

In Kashmir, border troops spent the last two days hunting down and killing 14 rebels who tried to cross over from Pakistan. The rebels refused to surrender, and during each encounter, some would act as a rear guard and fight to the death while others got away to try and cross elsewhere. The total number trying to cross in the remote area may have been several dozen. Some may have gotten through.

An Indian infantry division commander along the Line of Control in Kashmir says that the level of rebel infiltration from Pakistan is no different from last year. Because of snow and storms, there is little infiltration between December in May. But in May, the snow melts from the passes and trails and it's possible to move over into Kashmir.
