In Kashmir, rebel violence left two dead.

In Pakistan, the newly elected Islamic government in the Northwest Frontier province has shown itself hostile to American attempts to deal with al Qaeda and Taliban forces operating from Pakistan. The Northwest Frontier province is often called, more accurately, the "tribal territories," because it is the tribal chiefs who wield the real power out in the countryside.
